Refractory Quartz

Refractory quartz is the silica based aggregate used in the production of linings for furnaces, kilns and ladles operating at high temperature. The melting point of quartz, reaching 1710°C, and its volume stability at high temperature form the basis of silica bricks, ramming mixes and monolithic lining materials. Seyman Maden supplies refractory manufacturers with quartz in a range of fractions, from coarse aggregate through to fine matrix material.

Refractory Quartz

Refractory materials are structural elements that protect the surfaces in contact with molten metal, glass and high-temperature gases. Silica based refractories are one of the most widespread groups in this family and their basic raw material is high-purity quartz. The melting point of quartz at 1710°C, its low thermal conductivity and its ability to keep its shape under load at high temperature make it the preferred choice in units that operate continuously at high temperature, such as coke ovens, glass furnace superstructures and hot blast stoves. In these units, lining life depends directly on the purity of the raw material.

The most important property sought in refractory quartz is a low level of impurities that act as a flux. Alkali oxides, alumina and iron compounds lower the softening temperature of the silica matrix, limiting the service temperature of the lining and leading to early deformation. Refractory manufacturers therefore work with sources that have a high SiO₂ content and low impurities. The raw material extracted from Seyman Maden's own mine passes through washing, drying and screening stages and is processed to values of SiO₂ above 98% and Fe₂O₃ below 0.1%; the application-specific purity and fraction requirement is defined together with the manufacturer.

In refractory formulations, grain size distribution is as decisive as chemical purity. Coarse aggregate, medium-sized grains and fine matrix material are brought together in graded form to achieve dense packing, which lowers porosity and increases mechanical strength in the finished product. Silica bricks, induction furnace ramming mixes, castable refractories and repair mastics are all prepared on this principle. By offering products across a wide range, from coarse granular quartz fractions such as 3-5 mm through to micronized quartz, Seyman Maden enables manufacturers to source the grades required by their own recipe from a single supplier.
