The Smallest Component with the Most Visible Effect
In the chemical analysis of silica sand, SiO₂ reaches the ninety per cents while iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) usually stays at the parts-per-thousand level. Even so, it is often this small number that decides whether the product is accepted, because iron oxide is an extremely powerful colourant.
Where Does It Matter?
- Glass industry: iron gives glass a greenish-yellow tone. In colourless, transparent glass production this is the most restrictive chemical criterion.
- Construction chemicals and decorative products: in white cement based render, joint filler and moulding applications, high iron lowers whiteness and creates colour inconsistency.
- Refractory and ceramics: iron compounds can affect the melting temperature and high-temperature behaviour.
- Engineered stone and mineral fillers: the colour of the finished product directly reflects the whiteness of the raw material.
In filtration, blasting, casting and landscaping, by contrast, colour is irrelevant; there the decisive factors are grain distribution and mechanical strength.
Our Grades
- Below 0,1% Fe₂O₃ — general industrial use: filtration, blasting, construction, casting.
- Below 0,08% Fe₂O₃ — construction chemicals and decorative applications where whiteness is expected.
- Below 0,05% Fe₂O₃ — glass, refractory and applications requiring high purity.
In our low-iron products the whiteness value is 92% and above.
How Is the Iron Level Reduced?
The process works in two stages. Washing removes clay and iron-bearing fine material stuck to the grain surfaces; this stage produces the most noticeable drop in the iron level. However, iron inside the crystal structure of the grain itself cannot be removed by washing.
The final iron level is therefore determined mainly by the reserve the raw material comes from. The low-iron quartz structure of the Thrace basin makes the starting point favourable, independently of the processing. Because we extract the raw material from our own quarry and process it in our own plants, we can control this value batch by batch.
